CORBA Tools and Components

In 1996, Bionic Buffalo shipped the first ORB designed specifically for embedded systems. Since then, we have been producing ORBs, components, and ancillary software for use with a wide variety of CORBA-compliant applications.

Current products include a family of ORBs for platforms ranging from real-time embedded process control computers to high performance, fault-tolerant servers.

  • The Micro-ORB supports a tiny but proper subset of CORBA, including an IIOP subset. It is intended for small, networked embedded devices.
  • The Minimum CORBA ORB complies with the Minimum CORBA specification, which defines a proper subset of CORBA 3.
  • The CORBA 3 ORB fully complies with the CORBA 3 standard.
  • The OTS-Aware ORB supports transaction processing.
  • The Fault-Tolerant ORB can be used in redundant systems where extreme reliability is required.

All of these ORBs support the C language mapping standard. Except for the Micro-ORB, they also support Bionic Buffalo's Perl mapping. (There is no official Perl mapping. Note that it is also unclear how reliable Perl applications are in a fault tolerant environment. The ORBs assume that Perl applications are unreliable.)

All of these ORBs support threaded code, and all but the Micro-ORB require hosting on a platform supporting threads. (The ORBs themselves are written in C, so this means that pthreads is required except for the Micro-ORB.)
